The Thing in the Depths progression

Description

I had done some stats on my progression so far and decided to show some love to heroes who are mostly very well rated but I haven't used all that much in comparison. The result is a Dúnedain and a Rohan deck, both with a twist. This time, both decks pull off their weight in both questing and fighting.

General gameplan: Build Frodo up as a uber-defender (he can get up to something like 8 defense, although 4-5 is usually enough). Distribute cards with Beravor where necessary (this usually means slightly more cards for the Rangers as Rohan has less resources available). Stall a little (this can take quite long, even 7-8 rounds) to build your board to be ready to defend Captain Sahir and Na'asiyah for one round (usually you chump block). In return to Captain Sahir's attack, strike him back hard to get rid of all of his resources. The next round, quest through to stage 2. On stage 3, use some location control when necessary - usually, you will have to wait about 3-4 rounds more to get enough enemies in play before piling up the necessary damage on the big boss.

Side quests can be played at almost any time in this quest, you really only want to quest against the main quest for one round - when you have engaged the Corsair bosses and need to quest through.

Rangers - notable cards:

Aragorn gets Steward of Gondor and spends one resource for his questing in the first few rounds before you can put some allies into play. He can also get Celebrían's Stone and the Sword that was Broken later on.

Beravor gets Wingfoot, which helps a lot on the first part of the quest where the deck is heavier on the locations and there is a good chance of revealing one (keep an eye on the discard pile though to adjust your predictions).

Errand-rider lets you get resources to/from Beravor based on the situation, you can also pass a resource across the table once in a while.

Weather Hills Watchman fetches your Dúnedain Warnings and Ranger Summonses faster. Ranger Summons is an excellent card in this quest due to the thin encounter deck on the first stage.

Dúnedain Warnings and Fast Hitch go on Frodo

Mulligan for: Steward of Gondor. A Dúnedain Warning is also nice to see.

Rohan - notable cards:

Frodo Baggins gets sentinel and +1 from Arwen Undómiel. Together with Ring Mail, and Dúnedain Warning and Fast Hitch from the other deck, he can eventually defend most beefy attacks across the board.

Théoden is the resource acceleration of this deck, providing discount on a big part of the allies. At first he mostly quests, once equipped with Snowmane, he should also be combat ready after questing.

Éomer on Firefoot is your primary source of attack. If one horse wasn't enough, Arod and Rohan Warhorse can give him even more attacking potential combined with a little location control help.

Northern Tracker, West Road Traveller and The Riddermark's Finest are your other location control tools - you will probably not be at risk of location lock once you get past the initial few rounds, however you might still occasionally appreciate these cards on stage three in case some location gets grappled by too many tentacles.

Westfold Horse-breeder fetches your missing horses faster.

Unexpected Courage may go on Frodo in case the Fast Hitch is nowhere in sight, otherwise you can put it on Beravor to further stabilize card draw, or Aragorn to boost the other deck's attack.

Mulligan for: Arwen Undómiel.
