GrandSpleen 1398

A Forth, The Three Hunters! deck which aims to get multiple actions out of each hero. Aragorn quests and attacks, Halbarad quests and defends, and Beravor quests, draws cards, and either attacks or defends.

The Steed of the North often goes on all 3 heroes in a non-contract version of this deck. In this deck, it still can, because it helps you flip the contract faster. You may replace it with something else later on, except on Beravor. It depends on the board state. Its uses are:

-Letting Beravor draw cards and still be ready for combat
-Letting Aragorn quest and be ready for combat without spending a resource
-Letting Halbarad quest and still be ready for combat during rounds when you don’t have an enemy engaged
-Giving any of the heroes an extra “fancy” action so you can use a card like Expert Trackers or Guarded Ceaselessly.

I typically set up Beravor with both Wingfoot and Leather Boots because keeping her ready for card draw is very very important. Quest, ready via one of the Lore attachments, then draw cards. Then ready again via Steed of the North.

As for the rest of the attachments, one or two Armored Destriers and an Ancestral Armor for Halbarad. Celebrían's Stone for Aragorn and two of the weapons. One weapon and a Destrier for Beravor, or two weapons for her. Steed of the North certainly on Beravor, and perhaps one on Halbarad and one on Aragorn depending on what you need (Halbarad ends up with either two Destriers, or one Destrier and a Steed. Some quests really don't want you to keep enemies in play, or the flow of enemies is so frequent that you can't afford to leave one in play). Divide the Dúnedain Marks between Beravor and Aragorn as desired, and the Dúnedain Warnings between Halbarad and Beravor.

The main obstacle is high starting threat, meaning you get enemies right away. Sideboard cards include Woodmen's Clearing for threat reduction. I had success with this deck in 2-player when paired with a very good willpower deck that features Beregond as one of the heroes, providing some early game defense coverage and threat mitigation.

This deck is based off of an earlier non-contract version which included allies and took me through part of the Sands of Harad and half of the Ered Mithrin cycle. That's a pretty solid deck (see one early version of it in the 'derived from' link on this page (edit: I put it in the field, but nothing popped up. I just pasted into the bottom of the description instead). I have made many versions of it. Beravor is in most of them, but not the originally published one). This one is a unique take on it, being a no-ally deck. I wanted to do it as the concept fits 3 hunters perfectly (multiple readies for all heroes), and I'm pleased with the result.

As with the original, it's not fabulous as a solo deck simply because it takes time to flip the contract. Until then, willpower is poor. At full strength, you'll be questing for a little over 20 and still have all of your heroes available for 1 or 2 combat actions each.

A note about Steward of Gondor: it certainly makes the deck stronger. It helps you flip the contract a few turns faster. Several of the leadership attachments cost more than 1 resource (meaning they are never free even in a 3 hunters deck), and Aragorn is usually triggering his ability. You have several potential sources of resources: Rune-master (not generating a resource, just making the signal attachments free) and Sword of Númenor (which rarely triggers. When it should trigger, you'll probably forget about it). The deck can get set up without Steward, so you can drop it for thematic reasons if you want. It's still a functional and wonderfully thematic deck without Steward. But, its presence is definitely felt and appreciated. I typically mulligan for it, but if I have a Steed for Beravor in my starting hand and no Steward, sometimes I will keep that hand as well.

Current build 2/26/2020 (includes Steward):
Solo
Passage through Mirkwood: 1/1

2-player
Celebrimbor's Secret 1/1
Drowned Ruins 1/1. End stats: Aragorn WP 9, Atk 6, Def 2. Beravor WP 6, Atk 4, Def 3. Halbarad WP 6, Atk 2, Def 5.

The deck is well tested in a non-contract form, so I haven't done as much playtesting here as I normally do.
