After completing a Daily RingsDB challenge that required Fatty Bolger to be in a deck I asked myself a question: How important are hero abilities? In that deck I beat Conflict at the Carrock and never triggered Fatty's ability once. So, I decided to build a deck that either cannot or will not use a hero ability. Bombur's ability is useless since nothing triggers from hitting the 5 dwarf threshold. Pippin's ability cannot be used as long as Bombur is in play. And Fatty's ability is basically a treachery.
The Heroes, for the most part, are here to shell out resources and give access to and .
With a starting threat of 21 you should be able to build a boardstate before you have to engage anything TOO deadly. If you do, Bombur can defend fairly well. He will get better as you load him up with A Burning Brand (use it as it is printed while you can! It is going to be errated to Restricted and Exhaust to cancel a Shadow card), Armor of Erebor, and Arwen Undómiel. Use Erebor Toymaker to help pay for Self Preservation.
Resources will be plentiful if you get the Imladris Stargazer/Zigil Miner combo running.
If you draw Ered Luin Miner or Hidden Cache you can shuffle them into your deck via Drinking Song.
Combat is handled by allies. You will struggle at first with only 3 on the board. Obviously, because of that, this deck is more of a thought experiment than a deck that is built to be unstoppable.
What cards would you have included with this Hero Line-up? Should I have put in more Ents and Ent Draught and Entmoot. Perhaps I should have tried making a song deck utilizing Fireside Song? I'd be interested in your takes of a deck that does not use a Hero ability.
Happy Questing.

May 10, 2019Do Setup abilities count? Because an Éowyn/Glorfindel/Denethor lineup could probably beat most quests without ever triggering any of their abilities. |
May 10, 2019I think those should count |
May 10, 2019Unless you mean, you choose not to trigger those set up abilities. Is that allowed... outside of this thought experiment? |
I'm pretty sure I've never played a whole game without using any of my heroes' abilities, but I absolutely believe it to be possible. Generating a resource every round is possibly the most powerful ability any hero has.
