Seastan 42105

Part of a series on Bond of Friendship decks I'm building for all the traits.

I opted to go without Frodo so that it could be used in the saga quests. The deck is based on the traditional hobbit strategy of keeping your threat below enemy's engagement costs, so we have a lot of threat reduction cards, like The Shirefolk Sneak Attack, Gandalf, and Double Back.

One of the best strategies for hobbits is to use Gaffer Gamgee for defense, but this is tricky to do with the 2x restriction of the contract. Luckily, there are multiple options for both the resource generation (Resourceful and Steward of Gondor) and finding the ally (Gaffer Gamgee and Raise the Shire) which makes this two card combo still somewhat consistent.

And of course, having Merry start at 4 is just awesome. Not to mention starting at 5 in a saga deck alongside fellowship Frodo, with up to 9 when he's got two daggers. Insanity.

Is there a slot in this deck for the Red Book of Westmarch once it is released?

Aug 07, 2020 Seastan 42105

@thanatopsis Good question. Yes, I'd probably drop Errand-rider. You get some decent smoothing already with A Good Harvest and The Storm Comes.

Love it! Just one question: if not playing saga quests, would you go with Leadership Frodo or Spirit Frodo? Mostly asking because much like Jon I've never played a hobbit deck that isn't a "Tower of Sam" but this one doesn't really do that.

Aug 07, 2020 Seastan 42105

You could try both, but spirit Frodo might be the better deck? If you go with leadership Frodo you need to get some resource generation on him ASAP so that you can actually play your leadership cards.

4 heroes and 23 starting threat? This s is why I love hobbit decks (especially with Folco).

@Gizlivadi Moreover, Sp-Frodo would probably lead to a better hero lineup because you can drop Spippin (and even replace Folco with Lo-Pippin, which is powerful with 4 Hobbits). With Le-Frodo, you'd lose Sam and would still be stuck with Spippin, which even in this deck remains a "meh" card.

True, I was also considering that you could just basically take the Gaffer deck with the classic BR lineup and just slap S-Frodo and this contract on, although at that point you're starting at 27 threat and might as well just ditch the contract and Frodo and just play the regular version of the deck. Still, it'd be interesting to play that in the saga, but with Fatty instead of Frodo (now I really wish we had gotten another lesser known Spirit hobbit hero) though I'm not sure if that would be any better than just the regular deck.

Spirit Pippin!!

Aug 10, 2020 Seastan 42105

I love that nobody has really questioned spirit Pippin's inclusion here haha. Just goes to show how bad Fatty Bolger truly is! xD

i think its not much of a difference. you could also take fatty, its nearly the same. for multiplayer fatty is perhaps better.

Aug 10, 2020 Gizlivadi 1110

Fatty is absolutely terrible, we can all agree. I was trying to come up with a lineup that only needed 1 hero change for the saga. My only problem with @kjeld's suggestion of just running the BR lineup with S-Frodo is that you start at 27 threat which makes Resourceful much less reliable. Too bad, because I love that lineup, but I think Folco is sorta necessary just so you can get into Secrecy with a threat reduction of 3 rather than 7. Though if you run 4 heroes hardcasting Resourceful is indeed easier, but not sure if worth it.

What do you mulligan for? Do you find yourself short on card draw (there's a lot less in here than in most of your decks...)?

Aug 14, 2020 Seastan 42105

@Sfrug Great question. In general I try to make my Bond of Feeloship decks in such a way that there is no key card to mulligan for, as the 2x limitation really hurts your ability to rely on finding it.

I count almost 1/5th of the deck as cards that help you draw or find other cards which is pretty decent, but you might be right that it could use more. Perhaps drop Daeron's Runes for Peace, and Thought, which could then be a worthwhile mulligan card. I'm still getting used to re-evaluating Daeron's auto-include status in the context of a Bond of Friendship deck.

@Seastan Would you think adding Thorongil for Pippin would be a good idea? It would give some resource smoothing, but it would also be great with Pippin's ability. Then you can "get around" using Spirit Pippin. Also if you were playing the Sagas, what would you cut to add in Frodo's Intuition? Cause with five hobbits, that would be insanely good!

Mar 05, 2021 Seastan 42105

@Micah Thorongil could be fun. You could bring in Spirit Merry for threat reduction if needed too.

Sadly Frodo's Intuition is not legal in a Bond of Friendship deck.

Mar 05, 2021 Turgon 557

@SeastanAre you sure? The contract says you have to have ten cards in each of the four main spheres, but I don't think it says you can't have cards in other spheres (and it doesn't specify that the remaining ten cards have to be neutral).

Mar 05, 2021 Truck 1409

@Seastan i think you can have Frodo's Intuition in a saga BoF deck, it says you only need 10 cards from and .

Mar 06, 2021 Seastan 42105

Yeah, you guys are right. I thought it said that 10 cards had to be neutral, but they can be / as well. Maybe drop 1 Shirefolk and 1 Storm Comes for it?

Why do we have Bilbo Baggins without pipe cards? Also do you think we could actually build a 2 hobbit pipe/2 spare pipe engine here? Smoke/think, smoke rings, old toby, that whole package in 2s.

Aug 17, 2021 Clirian 49

Hi what would you exchange for Thorongil?

Aug 17, 2021 Clirian 49

And one other question: When you play the saga expansion with Frodo Baggins as the fifth hero, what threat level have Folco Boffin?
