I was looking at Seastan's Win Condition 6: Kill the Hill Troll on Turn 1 and though : you can kill 1 Hill Troll with a Core Set, but how many can you kill with an entire collection ?

So here is the challenge :

You are playing Journey Along the Anduin, with the following additions :

  • Setup: add any number of Hill Troll in the staging area. Replace any card from the encounter deck with a Hill Troll (i hope you like trolls^^).

  • Forced: at the end of the round, you win the game.

  • Every player setup action (MotK choice for example) happens before drawing your starting hand.

  • You have no minimum deck size. If you play with Bond of Friendship, your deck size must be a multiple of 5 in order to keep the ratio (for example, a 10 cards deck with 2 cards of each sphere). With The Last Alliance, a fifth of your deck (rounded up) for each ally trait.

  • Éowyn is taking a vacation with Beregond, and they took with them all the printed Doomed events. There are the only cards form your collection you can't use (all those cards are listed on this decklist).

How many victory points can you earn ? What is your maximum final score ? Is it reliable or luck-depending ?

Here is the deck that beat INFINITE TROLLS!!

As mentioned by Legolas, an infinite number of trolls is possible. I managed to do it with 9 cards (Heroes + cards), but interested if less is possible. Also interested what the maximum deck size would be to still kill reliably.

I think a viable solution for infinte kills with 7 cards (counting heroes+player cards+contracts)

Admittedly much less interesting than the other solutions though and inspired by them :)

Quite a few ways to go with 7 cards. Had no luck with 6, don't know if it is possible.

6 cards with contract works though I think ^^

I believe I found a 6 card solution (3 heroes, 3 player cards, no contract): ringsdb.com

I think you replace any card in the encounter deck with a Hill Troll :/

Jan 17, 2022 Seastan 42164

Right, it says any card, not every card. So I replace the bottom card with a hill troll.

Ahhh I understand, I read it like an imperative in that any card in the encounter deck is automatically replaced (therefore also the "I hope you like trolls"). Maybe @Emmental can clear up their intention (although the delay in interest in this deck might mean they are not around anymore).

Yes, you replace every cards. Consider the encounter deck an infinite number of Troll Hill.

And i totally forgot Justice Shall Be Done that trivialize a bit the resource puzzle. Can you come up with a solution without JSBD ? (pretty sure Denethor will show up, but you can also do without him)

That's the deck i came up last year (15 cards+contract, no Denethor but not reliable) : ringsdb.com

Note : Given that this deck was made after looking Seastan's first challenge, the killing solution is "core set-y" ^^

But looking at your deck @jban i think i can make a reliable version.

Ah too bad, I thought my solution was neat :)

This is a twist on @The Mormegil's Sam solution, without Justice Shall Be Done. It takes 9 cards + contract: ringsdb.com

Oh agreed, the way Charge into Battle's timing was utilized with Aragorn and the specific reveals to make it work was really elegant.

There is solution with 7 cards and no contract I believe, but it does utilize Denethor ... I did also steal some of the ideas you guys had for it :)

@The Mormegil Yeah, I was trying to avoid Denethor. But unless I am mistaken, your solution only has 11 attack?

Jan 18, 2022 Seastan 42164

Oh I see, you discard Boromir at the end. Very clever!

I noticed there is one common card in all the decks: Hour of Wrath. How many trolls can you kill without it (no other restrictions)?

Jan 18, 2022 Mormegil 3141

This one still enables infinite kills, but it is less originial (there are other options about the killing of course, Argalad+Readying also works with the same engine e.g.).

Infinite kills without infinite combo or Hour of Wrath ... struggling to find a reliable solution for infinite without Legacy, Smoke, Justice or Hour of Wrath, maybe you have some ideas ...

@The Mormegil: Great minds think alike! I made this deck last night. ringsdb.com

This was my other solution. ringsdb.com Love the challenges btw. I'm allways trying them out, just never posted anything. Props to everyone for creating the puzzles!

@SilvanCity @The Mormegil Nice! I had also arrived at the triple Arrows from the Trees solution. Here is one without Denethor: ringsdb.com

Jan 18, 2022 Emmental 407

Without hour of wrath nor JSBD : ringsdb.com (not 100% sure if this combo works).

I love the clevers tricks that came up so far !

Jan 18, 2022 Emmental 407

And a solo deck without those cards (no Captain's Wisdom neither :D), but not reliable : ringsdb.com

An interesting extension to this puzzle might be:

  1. What is the most amount of Hill Troll you can kill
  2. If your solution could be used to kill an unlimited amount of Hill Trolls, it is disqualified
