This is the deck I use to defeat Journey up the Anduin.

Side quests are extremely useful against this quest because if you can avoid placing any progress on the first quest stage you also avoid enemies from the evil creatures deck. After you clear Gather Information that you put in play from finding it with Thurindir, find a second side quest.
Haldir of Lórien can snipe some of the larger enemies from the encounter deck, but he is mainly here because the deck works best with two and 1 hero.
Try to get somebody who can defend the early game, like a Derndingle Warrior, and then once you have a side quest and the victory display the Vigilant Dúnadan can defend without exhausting.
