The key is to get Narvi's Belt and Steward of Gondor on Thorin Oakenshield so he can bring in the Erebor Battle Master. Once they are in play, it is easy to kill the trolls and advance. Don't be afraid to travel to a location that has a penalty. You want to get card draw from Ancient Mathom to find Narvi's belt and Steward of Gondor as quickly as possible.
I tried a version of this deck with Gandalf from the Hobbit but settled on core Gandalf. Card draw/threat reduction turned out to be worth more than the ability to keep Gandalf around.
