This Beorn's deck. i just needed some bare bones to start this off.

I've been trying with no success to beat Last March of the Ents 10 year anniversary challenge. which is basically, beat the quest with no heroes or allies other than Merry, Pippin or ent traited characters.

I have tried all sorts of decks and contracts with 2-handed or 1-handed play.

btw this deck of Beorn's also failed in epic style in my hands. crushed. his other similar deck has Gandalf in it so i can't use that.

I'm pulling my hair out with this challenge, can it even be done?

please help by posting decks for the challenge. (no one on you tube has done this challenge as far as a can search.

regards.

Phil

imo: for an pure ent-deck (or ent+merry and pippin) the ally Treebeard is mandatory (best ally overall and a very flexible resource)

so, i would either do Merry Pippin can do secrecy with (MotK) Leaflock (this deck with little changes, pippin for folko and replace some non-entallies ringsdb.com)

or, if 3 wanderer with ent, then Quickbeam then you can have Treebeard

a grey wanderer with one of the hobbita, could also be good. then i would choose pippin and the song of kings as defaultattachements. the you can play the whole range of lore-leadership-grey wanderer (means Timely Aid + A Very Good Tale + Drinking Song , Resourceful,.....) if you have trouble tinkering such a deck tell me, i can do for you.

Playing around with this a little bit, I think the best bet might be Grey Wanderer Quickbeam. Starting Strider on him gets you a hero with 4 that can ready twice from turn one, once from his ability and once from the contract (which also heals the damage from using his ability). This gives you a nearly guaranteed Ent of Fangorn on the first round, after which point you should advance to Stage 2. The quest is still difficult, as it's hard to muster early with Ents. However, I'm sure that with a few tries and a bit of luck, you can win through -- after all, once the Ent army gets going, it shouldn't have any trouble finishing off the quest.

If that doesn't work, then try Wandering Pippin as @doomguard suggests. You probably won't get an Ent of Fangorn, but might make up for it with Drinking Song and access to Fireside Song.

in this special case, the pipin-version should perhaps take strider because of the save ent (or more save ents if doing it more than one time) that could be more worth than the speed of the song of kings.

@quickbeam, he also (as nearly every grey wanderer with many allies in the deck) could use Timely Aid. only once a round, but i think, thata worth it, it maximize the chance to get Treebeard early

Cool ideas, I'd given up on getting the Ents of Fangorn. In all my games where I started with 3 heroes i struggled massively due to getting more staging cards and not being able to cope with the locations in staging that all basically shut you down.

I'm intrigued by quickbeam grey wanderer. I haven't tried that start yet, as I've been favouring grey wanderer treebeard.

I'm thinking of doing this now. Deck 1: Quickbeam Grey wanderer Deck 2 pippin and Merry spirit Deck. Use that to support the quickbeam Deck through attachments and events then throw it under the bus.

Keep the suggestions coming. I'll post here after my next attempt, which may be tonight.

I thought you were trying for 1-handed, which is really hard for this quest since so many nasty aspects don't scale. If you're going 2-handed solo, I think you'll have an easier time. In the second deck I might run Lo-Pippin and (MotK) Le-Merry. That way you get immediate access to Timely Aid and the many amazing cards like CelebrĂan's Stone, DĂșnedain Warning, and Steward of Gondor. You also get all the Ents, good healing, and some handy encounter deck manipulation like Out of the Wild and Risk Some Light.

You can run Song of Travel if you want access to -- could work with a Song sub-theme in that deck. There's also the option to run Defiant Challenge to speed up the Ents.

I've been running with 1 handed solo and 2 handed solo. Trying all sorts of combos and sometimes trying to get the Ent objectives but mostly realising that I should avoid them unless I can get them in turn 1. (As you have to put a token on stage 1 regardless, might as well try that turn)

However they are the key in dealing with staging locations.

The idea that Quickbeam hero could grey wanderer and still try and bag an ent objective is something I hadn't worked out. It would also allow me to have treebeard ally which I've not yet been able to do as I've mostly had treebeard hero in my deck attempts.

I beat the quest tonight. 2 handed solo. I've published the decks I'll try and link them in this feed.

Started playing at 21:45 and finally finished at 1:15am. Fiddly quest indeed.

The booming ents were instrumental in the end game. I used them to load up saruman with 11 damage (after defense) and then to quest for 39 using trained for war to quest in battle. Once I'd sent orthanc back to the staging area.

The merry and pippin deck were essential to provide spirit attachments and events. I used them to get a sword thane on leaflock too which saved my bacon when I drew grima for a shadow effect when saruman was dealing 7 damage undefended.

This has taken me about 5 weeks to complete.

make the spiritdeck a Forth, The Three Hunters! or pipe-deck would probably make it easier.

Jan 11, 2022 Asgardian Phil 25

That's a cool idea, but it wouldn't help unless you intend to keep merry and pippin as long as possible. The ents can't take restricted attachments and forth the three hunters needs them. The idea I had was to get some unexpected courage and valiant determinations onto ents, lower the threat of the ent deck and get some spare hold and cloaks on the ents.

Then loose pippin and merry so that I'm only drawing one encounter card per turn instead of two.

In my game last night side quests were very useful when orthanc was the active location and saruman had his damage on. Also using the tactics side quest at stage 2 to give battle didn't quite come up for me but it would have been really useful.

As it turned out I lost Leaflock which had been made into a hero allowing me then to use trained for war on my blast turn. Maybe next time I'd use sword thane on Beechbone next time to keep my heroes all tactics.

I couldn't have beaten this without kjeld's suggestion of a Quickbeam grey wanderer. So thanks pal.

I did get treebeard out and used his readying and resource smoothing at a few key times. Previously I'd always used treebeard hero either as a 3 hero deck or with grey wanderer.

I had to scoop my first attempt with these decks due to using song of Earendil wrong. I was using one response on the card multiple times. I realised now that if it worked that way it would have said X instead of 1. But I thought I'd read somewhere you can tee as many responses to a situation as you want and the fact that song of earendil doesn't exhaust meant I could keep using it for the same threat rise. It sounded a little broken that way song scooped and it then didn't come into play in my next game.

The only thing I struggled with was Quickbeam's low defense. It got hairy a few times and he survived an attack from saruman (ent draught was attached) and the 2 shadow cards were kind. But it was nearly game over. And another saruman attack I threw an ent under the bus but grima was one of the shadow cards which made the attack undefended. That's when I sacrificed leaflock swordthane hero.

Really chuffed that I beat it and I might have another go just to eliminate a super lucky run.

Congrats on completing the challenge!

Thank you. Couldn't have done it without you and this community. My Mate had given up on it too.

Just had an idea. Maybe adding hero treebeard to the marry and pippin deck to help get two of the fangorn objective ents and then sacrifice him as and when. I get treebeard ally into my hand in the other deck. Lore treebeard can damage himself to destruction as I understand his text. He could defend the hobbits (in my playthrough pippin sent the few enemies that engaged back to staging)

Having the ent of fangorn objective really helped, getting 2 on turn 1 would be sweet.

And adding the fall of gil glad in the deck to reduce their threat too when I sacrifice treebeard
