DECK NAME - Dragon Slayers
OVERVIEW - This is a challenging quest, especially when playing progression style. I don't think I'm the first person to realize that Elrond / Vilya is pretty much a must to win this quest solo. Also, I'm not the first to realize that it's critical to keep your threat under 30 for the first couple of rounds to avoid engaging Smaug. I started off including Frodo Baggins instead of Éowyn in order to lower my starting threat, but that extra 2 Eowyn provides is crucial to getting out in front of the encounter deck and having a chance to stay ahead. Additionally, as nice as it is to have Frodo's response to soak up a possible Smaug undefended attack, if that happens you pretty much are destined to lose due to your threat jumping so high so soon. So this trio seems to be the best the player card pool can muster at this point in the game's progression.
HEROES
- Elrond - attach Vilya and Unexpected Courage
- Eowyn - quest
- Glorfindel - attach Light of Valinor and quest
STRATEGY
- SETUP - you're looking for Vilya; I feel like adding card draw to dig for Vilya weakens the deck too much, so we'll have a bit of a gambit out of the gate
- ROUND 1 - be sure to put out an ally in round 1 and add Smaug to the staging area (sometimes it's okay to put him into play engaged with you if it's round 1 and you can put out 2 chumps); hopefully you can quest past Smaug and keep your threat below 30 for a few rounds as you steadily put allies into play; don't assume Vilya is a round 1 priority; you might need Elrond's
- VILYA - it's pivotal to get Imladris Stargazer out and keep her alive so she can manipulate your deck and set up Vilya for the expensive cards while drawing low cost allies and/or events into your hand
- CARD DRAW - this deck doesn't really utilize card draw; 2X Gandalf could potentially draw cards, but it's better to just manipulate your deck with Imladris Stargazer and/or Gildor Inglorion in order to both play an ally from hand each round and to play an ally via Vilya each round
- THREAT REDUCTION - staying below 30 is the dream
