DECK NAME - The Souring of the Shire

https://youtu.be/vjml4kEBtAc

OVERVIEW - This quest is very thematic; this deck is not. I've designed this deck to stay at a preferred Stage 2B while we amass locations in staging. We will destroy enemies in staging while keeping our threat lower than the engagement costs of enemies (32 with Pippin and 3x hobbits helps). Using scrying we will make sure not to quest successfully which allows us to stay in one location. Once there are 4-7 victory point locations in play, we'll rush the quest and arrive at stage 3 quickly. With the help of Outlands we will quest past any remaining threat in staging.

HEROES

  • Bilbo Baggins - super helpful card draw and he gives us 3 hobbits which makes Pippin's ability even better; also his 1 helps us to quest for odd numbers when needed to make no progress but also to not take threat by questing unsuccessfully
  • Grima - use his action to reduce card costs each round; we'll have no trouble lowering our threat as we go; we can eventually stop using his action
  • Pippin - his ability gives us a little wiggle room on enemy engagement (+3 with Frodo and Bilbo)
  • Frodo Baggins - attach Song of Travel; he'll pay for cards; his response is there in an emergency

STRATEGY

  • OPENING HAND - I always hard mulligan for Risk Some Light)
  • SETUP - chosen location needs to be Oppressive Forest
  • STAGE 2 - the best 2b is Shifting Trees; the only stage 2b we want to be sure to move on from is Closing in Around them; the idea is to stay at one stage 2b; using scrying we will let locations come out and remain in staging; remember during round 1 you can only play 1 card during planning due to Oppressive Forest; needs to be Henamarth Riversong or Risk Some Light to know how much will power to commit; you don't want to be successful or unsuccessful. Keep your threat at 32 or under (Pippin's ability) in order to not engage enemies. We will destroy enemies in staging using Ranger Bow and Poisoned Stakes. Once you have 5-7 vp in play and your board state is up and running, quest successfully and push for the 5 VP needed to advance to stage 3.
  • STAGE 3 - pretty easy; just travel to Withywindle and use a Risk Some Light to scout ahead; sometimes I quest for the win in one round but usually takes a few; chump with 3X Master of the Forge over the course of 3 rounds
  • Ithilien Tracker w Ranger Bow - does damage to enemies in staging in combination with Poisoned Stakes and Expecting Mischief
  • Good Meal - with Song of Travel attached to Frodo this allows for a major discount on The Galadhrim's Greeting
  • Expecting Mischief - use on Army of Flies to stop it from surging or to damage an enemy in order to soften them up
  • Scroll of Isildur - allows for repeated Risk Some Light in late game
  • Will of the West - crucial to insure threat stays below 31 at stage 3
  • SONG OF SLEEP TREACHERY - we can avoid by using scrying; no condition removal needed
